Upon seeing icons depicting queer women who served the church throughout history, a young lesbian wept as she realized that she is holy, beloved, and worthwhile. After reading about Pauli Murray, a black college freshman boldly claimed, “Because she did, I can.” These marginalized women—and so many others—have been empowered by the work of the Holy Women Icons Project.

Countering the elision of women in our public canons, whether religious, political, or social, the Holy Women Icons Project seeks to empower marginalized women by telling the stories of revolutionary holy women through art, writing, and special events. Our inaugural year as a non-profit has been a busy one. We started 2017 by partnering with the television show Tiny House Nation to build our tiny home as the first step in creating our off-grid retreat center. As a result, over 5 million viewers were exposed to the Holy Women Icons Project. We launched our online retreat series, and we’re currently creating even more retreats to release in the new year.

Since receiving our federal non-profit status in summer 2017, we have applied for over ten grants. Ranging in focus and amount, any grants received would help build the retreat center, create the financial backbone of the non-profit so that we can receive small salaries, and fund the Holy Women Icons of Grief Project. This new project highlights holy women associated with grief from twelve different traditions and will be a two-year, multi-media, multi-state undertaking meant to foster meaningful conversations about more holistic and embodied practices of grief.

To close the year, we are reaching out to our patrons, followers, and those who might find meaning in our vision, to raise $500,000 to make every part of the Holy Women Icons Project a reality: off-grid retreat center, financial backbone, and all efforts of the Holy Women Icons of Grief Project.
