Do you ever crave beauty? Like you yearn to be surrounded by wonder, awe, and inspiration. We find this in the beauty of nature, to be sure, but we also find it in art. Because art helps us imagine what’s possible.

And I believe it is a matter of justice that ALL people can be inspired by their surroundings.

That’s why art is such a vital part of my teaching about revolutionary women. Remember, my mission is teaching about revolutionary women through art, writing, retreats, and courses. This email is all about the art.

As the American embassy was bombed in 1999, I was hunkered in a Russian orthodox church in Belgorod, Russia gazing at the brooding whitewashed faces of male saints that filled every inch of the sanctuary, hands raised in endlessly frightening benediction. Where were all the women?

As a sensory overload accosted my eyes in Saint Catherine’s Monastery on the Saini Peninsula, I scanned the scene to find only two women crammed among all the icons. At the Temple of 1,000 Buddhas in Thailand, nary a woman was portrayed. And I continued to ask, “Where were all the women?”

Then I began to wonder, where are all the queer women? Then where are all the queer women of color? Thus began a new life-long project: Holy Women Icons. Subverted. Feminized. Queered. Folked. Resisted. And, I hope, Revolutionary.

Confronted with a virtually all-male sainthood in every major wisdom tradition, I began giving traditional iconography a folk-feminist twist.

Now, over 150 icon paintings fill the ever-growing collection, with over 125 sold in galleries, homes, schools, and faith communities all over the world.
